Breaking News: Same Sex Marriage Bill Passed In Parliament

Today, Thursday 7 December 2017 the House of Representatives has passed the Marriage Equality Bill through Parliament. Today is a momentous occasion after more than 20 failed Parliamentary attempts over the years.

The Bill follows on from a voluntary national postal survey in which 61.6% of voting Australians had said Yes! to legalising same sex marriage.

The Bill was passed in the Senate last week with votes 43-12.

This week was the last week of Parliament before it rose for the year.

The House of Representatives passed the Marriage Equality Bill at approximately 6.00 pm EAST on Thursday 7 December 2017 with no amendments.

In Australia one month’s notice of intent to marry is required which means that same sex couples will be able to marry in Australia from January 2018, pending Royal Assent by the Governor General which is expected to occur.
